What Else Can You Do?

Thinking of Leaving Teaching? is for teachers who are at a crossroads in their career, maybe thinking of leaving the profession and asking, “What can I do instead?” I have shared My Story of how I left teaching and created many useful resources which may help answer questions that you have and give you ideas about what else you can do.

As of June 2024, there are around 210 success stories on the Success Stories page here from ex-teachers who have kindly shared their experiences of getting jobs from Academic Developer to Youth Staff Entertainment.

When I started thinking of leaving teaching, I had no idea what else I could do as a job. I have learnt where to search for jobs, how to apply for them, and what to do in interviews. You can use the JOB STUFF menu at the top right, for all the information you need to know about job searching and applying for jobs, or you can click the links below.

Business & New Career Opportunities

Some of the following businesses have been set up by ex-teachers who have found success in a variety of areas from tutoring and coaching to art, dance, drama, phonics, music, singing, sports, languages, childminding, art, craft & play, swimming and supporting other businesses. With around 13.5k members as of May 2024, the private Facebook Group is a good place to get some ideas. With an anonymous posting option, it is a safe place for people to ask for help and advice, discuss topics and share opinions about jobs you can do if you leave teaching.

The Thinking of Leaving Teaching? Page

I set up the public Thinking of Leaving Teaching? Facebook page in 2017 to help people who were thinking of leaving the profession but had no idea what to do next.

A comment that someone wrote on my Thinking of Leaving Teaching Facebook page: "This is the most encouraging site that there's life after teaching that I've come across."
